Iceland Joins DESIGNclass

14. April 2025
As of 14 April 2025, the Icelandic Intellectual Property Office has formally joined DESIGNclass, an international classification tool in the field of design managed by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
By participating in DESIGNclass, the Icelandic Intellectual Property Office agrees to use the product indications from the Harmonised Database of Product Indications (HDBPI), which is applied within the DESIGNclass system. These indications describe the type of product that a design registration protects.
Iceland becomes the twentieth non-EU country to join DESIGNclass and to recognise the product indications contained in this database. In total, 46 intellectual property offices are now part of the DESIGNclass initiative.
DESIGNclass enables users to search for and translate product indications in up to 30 languages, thereby facilitating design registration across multiple jurisdictions and promoting harmonisation and transparency in international design filings. The Icelandic Intellectual Property Office will soon begin work on translating the product indications in DESIGNclass into Icelandic.
This tool is comparable to TMclass, which has successfully been used in recent years for the classification of goods and services in trademark applications.
Iceland’s participation in DESIGNclass is part of the Icelandic Intellectual Property Office’s broader international cooperation efforts and builds on EUIPO Convergence Programmes related to the interpretation of trademark and design legislation.
